Molly Picklum Goes Back-To-Back at Sunset Beach
Molly Picklum successfully defends her Sunset Beach crown and reclaims the world No. 1 ranking.
Just two weeks since a perfect 10 at Pipeline - the first ever ridden by a female - Molly Picklum continues to be on a roll after defeating local Bettylou Sakura Johnson in the Final of the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, stop #2 of the 2024 Championship Tour.
Iconic conditions at Sunset Beach pushed the world’s best to their potential. Despite both surfers showing signs of fatigue after a day of non-stop surfing, and Betty having the better single score, Molly held her ground to take out the win, now joining an exclusive club of women who have gone back-to-back in Championship Tour events (including Layne Beachley, Pam Burridge and Jodie Cooper).
“I didn’t think that stuff’s possible [back-to-back], like what?” an incredulous Picklum said. “It’s just like, you can’t predict it, Sunset’s crazy. This goes right up there for me, for sure.”
Molly is now World Number 1 on the WSL rankings, setting herself up for an incredible season ahead. Picklum will be wearing the prestigious yellow jersey heading into the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal (March 6 - 16).
